Subtitles

Subtitles, being a text supplement displaying over the video picture, can be used to show dubbing or translation of the audio track as well as to convey additional video related info like comments, explanations, etc.

This section describes how to enable soft digital subtitles whose formats are supported by various STB models.

Subtitles implementation

Soft subtitles can be implemented in two ways:

• internal subtitles - built-in media stream. One media stream can be accompanied by one or several subtitles variants in different languages. A specific subtitle variant can be displayed by default when the channel is turned on. The user can switch to (choose) other subtitle variants during video playback - see Subtitles enabling.
• external subtitles - a separate file that can be added to the picture. For a single video file, one or several subtitle files in different languages can be added to be chosen during playback.

If a particular channel contains built-in subtitles, a subtitle language can be started displaying as soon as the channel opens. For this, you need to assign a specific variant of subtitles in the Primary subtitle language of Playback settings. This case, the algorithm of subtitle choosing will be as follows:

1. As a default, the language from the Primary subtitle language option will be chosen.
2. If such subtitle language (see item 1) is not provided for the channel, an attempt will be made to use subtitle variant that matches the language of the Embedded Portal.
3. Otherwise, if such subtitle language (see item 2) is not provided too, the first subtitle language of the channel will be used.

During channel playback, the user can choose any other subtitle language which provided for the channel.

If option Primary subtitle language is set as Disabled, then subtitles will not be autostarted. But the user can choose (i.e.run) any provided subtitle language on your own.

Subtitles choosing

Subtitle choosing procedure aims to start showing subtitles in particular language from provided list variants. To choose the subtitles you need:

• During channel playback, open Subtitles menu (press Menu and then Left, Right on the remote). All provided languages for the channel are listed in the Subtitles menu.
• In the Subtitles menu, click on the desired subtitle language item from the list.

After the choosing made, the subtitle language name is displayed for a while in the lower-left corner of the screen (in the example - Swedish).

Supported subtitle types

Supported subtitles types for different STB models are shown in the table below. Mark * indicates that this subtitle type, in addition to the built-in mode, can be used in an external format.
